Clever bits of wordplay and archly sophisticated melodies are all well and good, but sometimes they get in the way of, rather than enhancing, the experience. Israel understands, keeping things simple and direct on his 14th LP. The Minneapolis troubadour eschews complexity for its own sake, preferring everyday language and roots-pop tunes that quickly stick to the ribs. The only complications come from the vexing emotional arc of adulthood: being a father, suffering from chronic health issues, trying to keep a musical career alive. That’s not to say he’s a downer; his ability to balance realistic expectations with stubborn optimism is a hallmark of his artistry. “Soul Will Be Found,” “Make This Life Mine,” and the title track are what rock ’n’ roll for grownups is all about.
